Chapter Nine
“Caro, are you okay?” Jill asked. “That’s the second time I’ve had to repeat my order to you tonight.”
“Sorry. I guess I’m a little preoccupied. I’ll do better.”
“If it has anything to do with those two sinfully hot men at the other end of the bar, I can understand it,” Jill said.
“Right? I know. They’re so sweet and have that sexy as hell look about them, don’t they?” Caro asked.
“I’m still pissed that you’ve claimed both of them. When you get tired of one of them, toss him my way. I won’t get tired of him anytime soon.”
“Sorry. They come as a pair, so winner takes all, girlfriend.”
“Well, damn.”
Caro laughed as the other woman poked out her lower lip in an exaggerated pout. She picked up her now full tray and carried it into the crowd.
“What’s up, sweetness?” Jasper asked when she moved to their end of the bar.
“You guys are a distraction. I’m messing up my drink orders because of you two,” she admitted.
“I like the sound of that,” Phillip said. “Means we’re making some headway.”
“Yeah, but it’s not good for my job. Tone it down some.”
“What? We can’t turn off being sexy, babe.” Phillip held out his arms as if saying look at me.
“All I can say is that it is a good thing you aren’t here on Wednesday and Thursday nights, or I’d end up fired. It still might happen if I can’t get my mind on my job,” she said.
“We’ll work on it for you,” Jasper said with a wide smile.
She shook her head at the two of them and began filling drink orders on her way back down the bar. Once again, she got the feeling someone was watching her. When she looked over at Jasper and Phillip, they were talking to each other and weren’t looking at her. She gazed out over the crowd but didn’t notice anyone paying extra attention to the bar area. It had to be her imagination.
An hour later, she called back to Curly that she needed a quick break. He covered the bar while she made a trip to the restroom. After cleaning up, she took down her hair and reworked it into a ponytail since some of it had managed to get loose. Then she returned to the bar.
“Here you go,” Curly said, holding out a glass of what appeared to be a soda.
“What’s this?” she asked.
“Guy bought you a Diet Coke.”
“Oh, one of my guys at the end of the bar?” she asked.
“No. Someone else. He said to give you a drink that you looked like you were thirsty.”
“Did he specifically say Diet Coke or just a soda?” she asked.
“Huh, he said Diet Coke. He must know what you like.” Curly’s brows narrowed. “Didn’t even think about it. Sorry I didn’t get his name for you.”
“No, that’s okay. Thanks, Curly.”
A cold chill raced down her spine even as her lips began to tremble. No one around here other than Phillip and Jasper knew that she liked Diet Cokes unless they’d been stalking her at the grocery store.
